AvenueQ in Singapore 27 Sept to 7 Oct 2012

26 July 2012, Singapore — Broadway Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q returns to Singapore with a Filipino cast from 27 September to 7 October 2012 at the Grand Theatre in Marina Bay sands.   Catch the colourful and quirky adult-minded puppets and human characters as the plot revolves around the difficulties in adjusting to early adult life.

If you have not watched Avenue Q before, you would be thoroughly entertained by Princeton the fresh-faced college graduate, Brian the out of work comedian, Trekkie an internet porn addict, Nick the good-hearted slacker, ROD the Republican, Kate the kindergarten teaching assistant and Lucy the Slut amongst other colourful types.

Do not be shocked by the slightly rude scenes too, but it is going to be all in good fun.   The story portrays the living life as a college graduate who moves into New York to follow his dreams and discovering the ever-elusive purpose in life.

If you are wondering what kind of puppets to expect in the show, there are three distinct types used.  They require unusually sturdy construction with double-stitching, reinforced seams, steel boning and custom fake fur and feathers.  There are Single-Rod puppets, Double-Rod puppets and Live-Hands puppets.

Accolades — Avenue Q opened at the Golden Theatre in 2003 and scooped the 2003 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical.  In 2004, the show won three Tony Awards for Best New Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.  In 2006, the show travelled across the Atlantic and opened in London’s West End’s Noel Coward Theatre (previously the Albery Theatre).   The show also resided at the Gielgud Theatre and Wyndham’s Theatre where it ran till October 2010 ahead of the first UK tour in 2011.

The People behind Avenue Q — The music and lyrics are by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx based on a book by Jeff Whitty and original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.  It is directed by Bobby Garcia and Chari Arespacochaga.   The puppets are conceived and designed by Rick Lyon.  Music arrangement and orchestrations by Stephen Oremus with musical supervision by Nick Finlow and incidental music by Gary Adler.  Choreography by Ken Roberson and the scenic design is by Anna Louizos, Costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley and Associate Lighting Designer Ryan O’Gara with sound design by Terry Jardine for Autograph.
