I am so happy.
A new movie "桃姐" (A Simple Life) starring Andy Lau & Deanie Ip and directed by Ann Hui, has scored a major acting award in the just concluded Venice Film Festival: namely, Deanie Ip 葉德嫻 has won the Best Actress award.
Deanie is the first HK actress to win this award, joining the ranks of past Best Actresses alumni such as mainland actress Gong Li, Juliette Binoche, Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore and Cate Blanchett.
Deanie is a veteran actress cum singer that I admire very very much. She first caught my attention when she acted with Andy Lau in the 1982 TVB serial "獵鷹", followed by the 1983 TVB serial "鬼咁夠運" co-starring Tony Leung. Thereafter in 1985, she teamed up with Andy again in the mega-hit movie "法外情" whereby her seamless portrayal of a fateful prostitute, made me cry buckets when I watched it in the cinema. I strongly think "桃姐" will have the same tearing effect on me.
Besides being an accomplished actress, Deanie Ip also wowed me with her sultry and heaftfelt vocals, in a string of 80's Cantonese hits such as "明星", "倦", "幸運是我" and "千個太陽". However, my personal favourite song is "不捨也為愛" which is one of the supporting theme-songs of Deanie's TVB serial "鬼咁夠運".
Back to this movie "桃姐", it is based on the real life story of the movie's producer and depicts a heartwarming relationship between a young master of a big family (played by Andy) and the servant of the family who raised him, Sister Peach or 桃姐 (played by Deanie).
However .. sigh .. "桃姐" is only scheduled to be released in Hong Kong next year Feb 2012 and in Singapore the following month Mar 2012.
